Onsen Spa Facility: Ryuguden Honkan

The historic elegant building has been designated as Japan’s Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Renovated in 2017, this facility has been transformed into an onsen spa facility for travelers visiting Hakone to spend a day of relaxation. Hakone Sekisho

During the Edo period, anyone entering or leaving Edo (present-day Tokyo) had to pass through an immigration gate called “sekisho.” Hakone Sekisho, which celebrates its 400th anniversary in 2019, was a well-known checkpoint on the Tokaido road that was also considered the most rigorous. Visitors can get a feel of the checkpoint from the ruins fully restored to their former glory.

Hatajuku Yosegi Kaikan

Hatajuku

Yosegi-zaiku is a type of traditional marquetry unique to Hakone. It originated in an area of Hakone Hatajuku during the Edo period. Diverse patterns are created by gluing together different-colored timbers and cutting them into thin sheets. Visitors can listen to explanations about the history and craftsmanship from a craftsman with 40 years of experience and gain firsthand experience making yosegi-zaiku accessories.
