The station was established in 1914 as Taga Station with the opening of the Taga Line from Takamiya to Taga.
The station prospered from carrying visitors to Taga Shrine and freight transport and is still used today by shrine visitors, especially at New Year.
The station has a terminus layout with three platforms serving two tracks. Previously, the station concourse was larger and a freight line extended toward the mountainside.
The station building is a community facility and functions as a tourist information center.
