Suginosawa, Myoko-shi, Niigata Prefecture
The Myoko-Suginohara Ski Resort extends across the slopes of Mt. Akakura and Mt. Mitahara, which form the crater rim of Mt. Myoko, one of Japan’s most famous peaks. It is known for its long trails, the most extensive of which is around 8.5 km in length.
From near the top of the ski lift, at an altitude of around 1,500 meters, Lake Nojiri is spread out below while ahead is a view of the mountains of the northern Shinano region.
In the fall, a hiking trail that starts near the top of the ski lift and crosses the wetlands on the southern slope of Mt. Akakura gives access to an unspoilt natural environment whose features include Japanese lime trees, beech forest, and great Erman’s birches.
In winter, the dazzling white of the slopes and snow-covered lime trees stands in beautiful contrast to the blue of the sky. Under the right conditions, such as a cloudless sky and clear air, it is even possible to see Mt. Fuji in the far distance. Depending on weather conditions, a sea of cloud can sometimes be seen below.
