Kussharo Onsen, Teshikaga-cho, Kawakami-gun, Hokkaido Prefecture
Located in the Akan-Mashu National Park on the shore of Lake Kussharo, Japan’s largest caldera lake, this is a completely unique hot spring hotel. All 208 guestrooms overlook the lake shore, where the caldera and surrounding landscape present a timeless view untouched by human hand. The hotel also has facilities allowing guests to bathe in the hot spring waters of Kussharo, which are fed by a source around 1,000 meters below ground. With its ceiling height of some 10 meters and a plate-glass wall, the main restaurant has a spacious feel with a live kitchen at its center, serving dishes that incorporate local produce. The garden area that extends along the shore in front of the hotel offers opportunities for lakeside walks as well as glamping, yoga, and other activities in season. One unforgettable sight is the sea of cloud that can sometimes be seen from the Tsubetsu Pass due to the natural effect of the caldera and the mountain watershed.
