Hachimanyama is a mountain 271.9 meters high on which are the ruins of Hachimanyama Castle, built in 1585 by Hidetsugu Toyotomi.
The castle is estimated to have been a great fortress with the main keep on the mountain summit surrounded by the second bailey, west bailey, north bailey, and outer bailey. Nowadays only the stone walls remain.
The summit is nowadays occupied by the Murakumogosho Zuiryuji Temple, which was moved here from Kyoto. The Hachimanyama Ropeway takes around 4 minutes to connect the base with the summit, from where views of Lake Biwa and the former castle town of Omihachiman can be enjoyed.
